Navigating pandemic restrictions

Orkest was engaged during the COVID-19 pandemic by a PNG gold mine with a 5000+ BAU global workforce to assist with developing roster solutions for the complex and ever-changing mix of testing, isolation and travel restrictions.

As restrictions eased, an interim roster change was embedded to incorporate an interim roster structure within the confines of the restricted charter flight arrangements (due to isolation requirements).  A final transition to their current 3-panel rosters helped smooth out the crew changeovers, provide employees with longer breaks at home and resulted in flight savings of $USD 4 million per year.

“Orkest Consulting was initially engaged by Lihir Gold Mine to provide rostering solutions for the challenges created by COVID protocols, isolations and restrictions.

With expert knowledge and guidance, Orkest was able to assist in developing mobilisation information for flight bookings and eventually, once restrictions were lifted, they further assisted in developing a new flight schedule for the 5000+ movements per month to and from site. This new schedule was developed to level the movements caused by crew changeovers, whilst taking into consideration camp and flight capacities and the complexities of servicing multiple hubs throughout PNG and internationally.

The overall professionalism and honesty with which Jim works combined with an easy going approachable nature gave confidence in the service provided.”
